The Ma Rainey Home is a historical Columbus landmark honoring the legendary “Mother of Blues”, Ms. Rainey. Born as Gertrude Pridgett (1886-1939) on April 26, 1886 in Columbus, GA, She later married William Rainey and together they both tourned with the Rabit Foot Minstrels. She was featured singing the Blues.

She made over 100 records for Paramount Records and they marketed her as the “Mother of the Blues,” the “Songbird of the South,” the “Gold-Neck Woman of the Blues” and the “Paramount Wildcat.” – according to: “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

When the blues faded from popularity in the Thirties, the earthy Ma Rainey returned home to her Georgia hometown, where she ran two theaters. Rainey was inducted into the Blues Foundation’s Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Ma Rainey died from a from a heart attack on December 22, 1939.
